009 // Why We Made Just 30

009 // Why We Made Just 30

When I started planning Supermoon's first collection, one of the biggest decisions wasn't about the design of a jacket or the choice of fabric. It was how many we should actually make.

After years of working in established fashion businesses, launching a small brand brings an entirely different kind of responsibility. Every style and every size is a decision you have to stand behind.

For our first edition, we chose to make 30 pieces per style.

Starting Small, Learning Properly

I have plenty of experience designing and developing clothes, but that doesn't mean I know exactly what a new Supermoon customer will buy.

It's only when people begin looking at the collection, trying pieces on and wearing them that you start to learn what really works.

Which styles attract attention? Which sizes are most useful? What do customers love, and what would they change? I don't want to pretend we can answer all of that in advance.

A smaller first run gives us a chance to make informed decisions about what comes next, rather than commit to large quantities on assumptions.

The Reality of Small Production

There are compromises. Producing smaller quantities generally means a higher cost per garment and sometimes a more complicated conversation with manufacturers.

It also means we may run out of a size before we're ready to produce more. That's something we'll need to manage and learn from.

And I wouldn't claim that making only 30 automatically makes a garment sustainable. Material choice, manufacturing, transport, durability and how long somebody actually wears a piece all matter.

I think it's important to be realistic about that rather than make claims that sound good in a marketing campaign.

A Considered First Edition

The quantity helped keep us focused. I wanted a tight collection of garments that made sense together, not an endless range of styles competing for attention.

It also fits with the broader idea behind Supermoon: clothing that isn't defined by one season and that you can come back to again and again.

Thirty isn't a magic number. It's simply the starting point that felt manageable and sensible for this first collection.

What Comes Next

Edition 01 is the beginning. We'll listen, learn and decide what deserves to return, what needs improving and what we might introduce next.

For now, I'd rather begin with a small collection that I believe in than pretend we know all the answers before we've sold a single garment.
