006 // A Little More Room
Share
I've always been interested in the difference between a garment that fits comfortably and one that's simply too big.
The distinction can be just a few centimetres, but on the body it changes everything. Relaxed clothing isn't necessarily oversized clothing. It's about putting the room in the right places and controlling the proportions everywhere else.
It's All About Balance
When I fit a jacket, I look at the relationship between the shoulder, chest, sleeve and body length. If you make the chest wider without considering the shoulder or hem, the whole thing can suddenly feel wrong.
Trousers are no different. A relaxed thigh or wider leg opening can look intentional and comfortable, provided the waist, rise and length have all been considered together.
This is where years of fittings make a difference. A sketch gives you a direction, but the garment on a body tells you what needs changing.
The Importance of Layering
I wanted Supermoon to be a collection that could be worn together, not a series of isolated outfits.
A jacket should have enough ease to sit over a shirt or knit. A coat needs to work over a jacket without feeling cumbersome when worn with less underneath.
The way one garment sits on top of another is a design consideration in its own right. Sometimes gaining that flexibility means changing a sleeve shape rather than just increasing the body width.
Why Three Sizes?
Supermoon uses S/M, M/L and L/XL. It's a more consolidated approach than the conventional size run, and I realise it can take a little explaining.
Many of the styles have been developed with an easy cut, allowing one size to work for a broader range of people. But that doesn't mean every garment fits identically, or that there is one perfect size for everybody.
That's why we've included individual flat garment measurements on the product pages. If you're between sizes, or want to wear heavier layers underneath, the larger size may be a better option.
Room With Intention
When somebody describes a jacket as comfortable, I don't necessarily hear that as a compromise on design.
Sometimes the most considered decision you can make is to leave a little more room.
